Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB+
The Patriots let Johnson fall and pounced. Final grade: B+.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Tez Johnson slide 44 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They are betting Diggs proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Josh Simmons
In the 17th pick they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick38 Rnd2 Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick44 Rnd2 Donovan Ezeiruaku
The board had cheaper options than Donovan Ezeiruaku at pick No. 44, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick49 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
The board had Xavier Watts higher than pick 49, and the safety fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Value with a capital V on Jayden Higgins in Round 3, Pick 5, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76 Rnd3 Darien Porter
Darien Porter at No. 76 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in the 77th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick106 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
A quiet steal in slot 106: Kevin Winston Jr. for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick144 Rnd5 Tez Johnson
Somehow Tez Johnson was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 6, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick149 Rnd5 Andres Borregales
They liked Andres Borregales enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 149. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick153 Rnd5 RJ Harvey
A top-tier running back at a bargain, RJ Harvey in pick No. 153, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick171 Rnd5 Connor Colby
Connor Colby at the 171st overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick220 Rnd7 Fadil Diggs
They reached a country mile for Fadil Diggs at pick 220, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick238 Rnd7 Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards at the 238th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
