Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Barryn Sorrell at pick No. 227 is 88 spots clear of where he belonged. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On value alone, Farmer makes the weekend a net positive.

On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Tetairoa McMillan
In the 11th overall pick they get a true top target at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick19 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
In No. 19 they get a security blanket over the middle. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker at pick No. 43 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick100 Rnd3 Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at pick 100 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Charles Grant
Steal is underselling it; Charles Grant at Round 4, Pick 11 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138 Rnd4 Joshua Farmer
Circle this one: Joshua Farmer at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick147 Rnd5 Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at Round 5, Pick 9 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick160 Rnd5 Tommi Hill
Tommi Hill in the 160th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick227 Rnd7 Barryn Sorrell
They reached into another round for Barryn Sorrell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick249 Rnd7 Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III in pick No. 249 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick252 Rnd7 Mac McWilliams
Mac McWilliams in pick 252 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
