The 49ers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent the Round 4 slot on Oluwafemi Oladejo, a name most had 121 spots down the list. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Brooks. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In pick 24 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jack Bech
Jack Bech at Round 3, Pick 12 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick97
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dylan Fairchild in the Round 3 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick99
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Circle this one: Darien Porter at pick No. 99 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick112
Rnd4
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo in the 112th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick138
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
The board fumbled Brashard Smith all the way to slot 138, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick139
Rnd4
Jalen McLeod
They reached into another round for Jalen McLeod, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick189
Rnd6
Willie Lampkin
Willie Lampkin is a better player than the 189th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick228
Rnd7
Aubrey Burks
Aubrey Burks at the 228th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick232
Rnd7
Miles Frazier
No drama and no debate, Miles Frazier went about where he belonged in pick No. 232. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick255
Rnd7
Ja'Corey Brooks
Steal is underselling it; Ja'Corey Brooks at slot 255 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
