The steal of the weekend belongs to the Seahawks and Belton: D. The war room fell hard for Dont'e Thornton Jr., and it showed at the 152nd pick: 33 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Belton. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The veteran additions, Myles Garrett chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In pick 22 they get a red-zone target to build around, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick50
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
They robbed the room for Walter Nolen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick95
Rnd3
Will Howard
A premium they did not need to pay, Will Howard a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
Pick103
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
They read the board right and Malachi Moore was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 2. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick116
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
No edge and no loss on Hollin Pierce in the 116th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 132nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick137
Rnd4
LeQuint Allen
LeQuint Allen in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick152
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at Round 5, Pick 13 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick173
Rnd5
Anthony Belton
They will replay Anthony Belton at slot 173 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
