STEEL DRAFTING FOR THESteelers

Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall

FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Steelers: B-. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Steelers started one anyway for Devin Leary, 46 picks ahead of schedule. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 3 of 9 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In No. 20 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid sticker price for Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 20, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick84
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick120
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at slot 120 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick121
Rnd4
Cam Hart
Cam Hart at the 121st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick198
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They went early on Christian Jones in pick No. 198, and the value did not follow. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick238
Rnd7
Devin Leary
Devin Leary at Round 7, Pick 18 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
