The 49ers landed square in the muddy middle: C+. The 49ers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jaylen Harrell at the 133rd overall pick regardless, 74 picks early. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Landing Jones that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
If Ruke Orhorhoro and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Ruke Orhorhoro
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
They jumped the gun on Sedrick Van Pran, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at the 94th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick129
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
They let Elijah Jones come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 29. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick131
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Blake Fisher at the 131st pick is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jaylen Harrell
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylen Harrell this early at slot 133. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick176
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Javontae Jean-Baptiste well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick211
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They liked Frank Gore Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 6, Pick 36. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215
Rnd6
Ryan Flournoy
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ryan Flournoy in pick No. 215. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
They paid up for Joshua Cephus at pick 251 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
