Manning is the plan now, and the 49ers grade out a C+. Nobody else had Raheem Anderson anywhere near the Round 5 slot. The 49ers did, by 154 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Whatever Arch Manning becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Lew.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Arch Manning
In the 25th overall pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Connor Lew
Circle this one: Connor Lew at pick No. 60 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick97
Rnd3
Chandler Rivers
The board had cheaper options than Chandler Rivers at No. 97, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick109
Rnd4
Caleb Tiernan
Value with a capital V on Caleb Tiernan in the 109th pick, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick125
Rnd4
Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick134
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at pick 134 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick137
Rnd4
Connor Tollison
This one needs a full-page explanation: Connor Tollison in the 137th pick, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick156
Rnd5
Raheem Anderson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Raheem Anderson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick164
Rnd5
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at pick 164 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick170
Rnd5
Pat Coogan
A big swing on Pat Coogan at pick No. 170, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick174
Rnd5
Zach Rice
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zach Rice this early at the 174th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick238
Rnd7
J.Michael Sturdivant
Nice patience on J.Michael Sturdivant, who had no business lasting to No. 238. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick241
Rnd7
James Brockermeyer
James Brockermeyer at Round 7, Pick 25 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick257
Rnd7
Shamar Porter
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Shamar Porter. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
