J DRAFTING FOR THEVikings

Draft Grade — Vikings

The Vikings kept it disciplined and banked a B-. Nobody had Da'Shawn Womack this high, and it is not close. The Vikings reached 60 spots to get him at pick No. 196.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Davis pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and tight end. Davis falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In No. 18 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. More want than need.
Pick50
Rnd2
Darrell Jackson Jr.
Value said wait; Darrell Jackson Jr. in the 50th overall pick says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick82
Rnd3
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles at pick No. 82 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick97
Rnd3
Logan Jones
Logan Jones in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick118
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Tacario Davis in slot 118 leaves quarterback and tight end for later.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jamal Haynes
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jamal Haynes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick173
Rnd5
Jordan Castell
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Castell at slot 173, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick196
Rnd6
Da'Shawn Womack
They reached into another round for Da'Shawn Womack, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick208
Rnd6
J.C. Davis
J.C. Davis in Round 6, Pick 32 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick231
Rnd7
Rico Flores Jr.
They let Rico Flores Jr. come to them and pounced at the 231st overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
