Draft Grade — Dolphins

The phones sank the Dolphins this weekend: D-. The Dolphins spent real capital to be 43 picks early on Billy Schrauth, and the board is going to hold them to it.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is not that Ponds is a bad player; it is that the Dolphins had louder needs to answer first.
The Haulcy steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the Round 1 slot they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Chris Johnson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Chris Johnson in the 43rd pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick59
Rnd2
D'Angelo Ponds
A surprising call. With quarterback, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent Round 2, Pick 27 on D'Angelo Ponds, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick75
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
They will replay A.J. Haulcy at No. 75 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick82
Rnd3
Mikail Kamara
They talked themselves into Mikail Kamara at pick 82, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick87
Rnd3
Caden Curry
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Caden Curry well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Billy Schrauth
A wild overpay on Billy Schrauth in pick No. 90, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick97
Rnd3
Treydan Stukes
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 97 on Treydan Stukes with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
Pick114
Rnd4
Logan Jones
Value said wait; Logan Jones in Round 4, Pick 14 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick128
Rnd4
Beau Stephens
They jumped the gun on Beau Stephens, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick149
Rnd5
Keagen Trost
A reach for Keagen Trost in the 149th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Pick195
Rnd6
Zxavian Harris
Zxavian Harris at No. 195 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227
Rnd7
Kaden Wetjen
Nothing to complain about; Kaden Wetjen went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
