GWG5 DRAFTING FOR THEVikings
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Vikings a B-. Every other box got a look, but edge rusher did not. The Vikings will head to camp with the same hole they walked in with.
They will need Kelly to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Coleman Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the 18th pick they get a three-down second-level presence. Need was not the driver here.
Pick49
Rnd2
D'Angelo Ponds
They paid sticker price for D'Angelo Ponds in slot 49, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick82
Rnd3
Sam Hecht
Sam Hecht in pick 82 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick97
Rnd3
Emmett Johnson
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emmett Johnson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick163
Rnd5
Kevin Coleman Jr.
Kevin Coleman Jr. at No. 163 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick196
Rnd6
David Gusta
No drama and no debate, David Gusta went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 15. It fills a real need, too.
Pick234
Rnd7
Antonio Kite
Good price on Antonio Kite in pick No. 234, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick235
Rnd7
Miller Moss
A tidy little value on Miller Moss in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick244
Rnd7
Jack Kelly
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jack Kelly well ahead of where he belonged. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
