FutureD
Harris should have been long gone. The Raiders pounced, and earned a D. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Raiders shredded theirs for Caleb Ransaw. He came off 58 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
They banked enough surplus on Harris to cover a lot of smaller sins. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In pick 12 they get a lead back with juice at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick17
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In pick No. 17 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick37
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Luther Burden III is a better player than the Round 2 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick39
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
No drama and no debate, Jihaad Campbell went about where he belonged in the 39th overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick41
Rnd2
Shavon Revel Jr.
Shavon Revel Jr. in the 41st pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick68
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
By-the-book stuff, Tate Ratledge at the 68th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick108
Rnd4
Jacob Parrish
They jumped the gun on Jacob Parrish, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick143
Rnd5
Tre Harris
Tre Harris in No. 143 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick148
Rnd5
Caleb Ransaw
They reached a country mile for Caleb Ransaw at pick 148, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick180
Rnd6
Jaydon Blue
Jaydon Blue at slot 180 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick213
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Circle this one: Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 213 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
They robbed the room for Oronde Gadsden II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick222
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
Taking Jack Kiser in pick 222 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
