Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall

FutureB
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Bengals. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bengals would have aced it. Amari Gainer at No. 252 is 49 spots clear of where he belonged. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On value alone, Simpson makes the weekend a net positive.
They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In slot 18 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick49
Rnd2
Graham Barton
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Graham Barton. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick116
Rnd4
Edefuan Ulofoshio
They left a pile of value on the table to take Edefuan Ulofoshio this early at No. 116. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick134
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones slid further than he should have, and the 134th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick148
Rnd5
Curtis Jacobs
Value said wait; Curtis Jacobs in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick164
Rnd5
Jaylin Simpson
They read the board right and Jaylin Simpson was the payoff at pick 164. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick175
Rnd5
Aki Ogunbiyi
They paid up for Aki Ogunbiyi at pick No. 175 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Pick196
Rnd6
Christian Jones
By-the-book stuff, Christian Jones at No. 196 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick235
Rnd7
Derek Wingo
Derek Wingo at slot 235 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick248
Rnd7
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick252
Rnd7
Amari Gainer
Amari Gainer at the 252nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
