Draft Grade — Bears

FutureD
The Bears won the night they stopped Smith from sliding. Grade: D-. The war room fell hard for Jared Wilson, and it showed at pick 149: 55 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
No edge and no loss on Princely Umanmielen in No. 6; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick14
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In pick 14 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick37
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 37 with a little surplus value in Tate Ratledge. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick40
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Nice patience on Kenneth Grant, who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 8. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick54
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
A tidy bit of business in pick 54, where Kaleb Johnson graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick71
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at pick No. 71 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick73
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
They robbed the room for Xavier Watts here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jake Majors
The board had Jake Majors higher than No. 109, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick114
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
You do not let a wide receiver like Tez Johnson reach slot 114 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick141
Rnd5
Rylie Mills
Rylie Mills at the 141st pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick142
Rnd5
TreVeyon Henderson
A running back of that caliber at the 142nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick144
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Danny Stutsman in Round 5, Pick 7, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jared Wilson
A wild overpay on Jared Wilson in pick 149, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Pick162
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick200
Rnd6
Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith at slot 200 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Logan Parr
They did well to land Logan Parr in pick No. 227, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick232
Rnd7
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in the 232nd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick246
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
Garrett Dellinger in Round 7, Pick 30 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
