Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB
The Patriots lost the trade table, and the D tells the story.

Somebody took the Patriots to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.

Greene III has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. With interior defensive lineman and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Thieneman.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Deontae Lawson
In slot 27 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick48 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
A safety of that caliber at pick 48 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick49 Rnd2 Derrick Moore
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Derrick Moore at the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick50 Rnd2 Joe Royer
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joe Royer. It fills a real need, too.
Pick51 Rnd2 Iapani Laloulu
They paid sticker price for Iapani Laloulu in pick No. 51, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick59 Rnd2 Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard at No. 59 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick76 Rnd3 Whit Weeks
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman and quarterback to take Whit Weeks, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick83 Rnd3 Charles Jagusah
They talked themselves into Charles Jagusah at the 83rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick112 Rnd4 Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III in slot 112 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick127 Rnd4 Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun in the 127th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick129 Rnd4 Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman at pick 129 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick151 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Xavier Nwankpa well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick190 Rnd6 Hykeem Williams
Hykeem Williams at No. 190 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick194 Rnd6 J.Michael Sturdivant
No edge and no loss on J.Michael Sturdivant in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick218 Rnd7 Tony Grimes
Tony Grimes at pick No. 218 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick225 Rnd7 Austin Siereveld
They reached a country mile for Austin Siereveld at Round 7, Pick 9, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
