BEARSKIN 18 DRAFTING FOR THEBears
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bears checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. The Bears looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Phillip Webb at slot 147 regardless, 143 picks early. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In No. 10 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Will Campbell
They will replay Will Campbell at Round 2, Pick 7 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Good price on Tyler Booker in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick72
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at the 72nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick147
Rnd5
Phillip Webb
Phillip Webb in slot 147 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick197
Rnd6
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the 197th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick233
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
They talked themselves into Thor Griffith at pick 233, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick244
Rnd7
Jamaree Caldwell
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jamaree Caldwell in slot 244, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
