Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C
ValueC NeedB+ TradesF FutureC
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the C.

The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Anthony Lucas, taking him 42 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

If Caleb Lomu and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Caleb Lomu
In No. 27 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick49 Rnd2 Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. in pick No. 49 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick58 Rnd2 Anthony Lucas
They reached a country mile for Anthony Lucas at Round 2, Pick 26, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick92 Rnd3 Sam Roush
They did well to land Sam Roush in the 92nd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick127 Rnd4 Bud Clark
Bud Clark at slot 127 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick133 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
A premium they did not need to pay, DeMonte Capehart a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick138 Rnd4 Domani Jackson
The board had cheaper options than Domani Jackson at the 138th pick, and it noticed. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick171 Rnd5 J'Mari Taylor
J'Mari Taylor at Round 5, Pick 33 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
