Draft Grade — Chiefs

The Chiefs cashed the board's mistake on Mustapha: B.

The Chiefs spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Malik Mustapha, the No. 136 name on the board, in No. 161. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. Goncalves has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Troy Franklin
In No. 29 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick66 Rnd3 Ruke Orhorhoro
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ruke Orhorhoro. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick92 Rnd3 Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves in Round 3, Pick 29 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick104 Rnd4 Jacob Cowing
A tidy little value on Jacob Cowing in slot 104, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick129 Rnd4 Isaiah Adams
Isaiah Adams in the 129th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick161 Rnd5 Malik Mustapha
Circle this one: Malik Mustapha at pick No. 161 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick171 Rnd5 Frank Gore Jr.
Good price on Frank Gore Jr. in pick 171, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Pick175 Rnd5 Curtis Jacobs
A straight-up fair deal on Curtis Jacobs at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207 Rnd6 Omar Speights
Nothing to complain about; Omar Speights went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick250 Rnd7 Walter Rouse
Walter Rouse in pick 250 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
