FutureB-
The jury is out on the Eagles. For now, C+. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Eagles took Peny Boone a full 166 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Brooks falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
Hit on Tyler Warren and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In pick No. 31 they get a mismatch in the passing game, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
Pick139
Rnd5
Davin Vann
Davin Vann at the 139th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick145
Rnd5
Tyreak Sapp
Tyreak Sapp at slot 145 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick160
Rnd5
Collin Oliver
Collin Oliver at Round 5, Pick 23 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick162
Rnd5
Phillip Webb
They talked themselves into Phillip Webb at pick 162, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick163
Rnd5
Nazir Stackhouse
A reach for Nazir Stackhouse in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick164
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at pick No. 164 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick166
Rnd5
Tonka Hemingway
A wild overpay on Tonka Hemingway in slot 166, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick174
Rnd5
Tim Smith
Tim Smith at the 174th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick177
Rnd6
Phil Mafah
Value with a capital V on Phil Mafah in Round 6, Pick 2, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick181
Rnd6
Brant Kuithe
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brant Kuithe this early at No. 181. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick185
Rnd6
Jalen Travis
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalen Travis in the Round 6 slot, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick190
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
They paid up for Seth McLaughlin at the 190th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick198
Rnd6
Peny Boone
Value said wait; Peny Boone in pick 198 says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick201
Rnd6
Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings in Round 6, Pick 26 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207
Rnd6
Trevor Etienne
They read the board right and Trevor Etienne was the payoff at the 207th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick211
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Steal is underselling it; Ollie Gordon II at slot 211 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick214
Rnd6
Ja'Quinden Jackson
Ja'Quinden Jackson at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick215
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
They will replay Tahj Brooks at pick 215 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders at the 226th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick227
Rnd7
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss in pick No. 227 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick230
Rnd7
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in No. 230 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Pick243
Rnd7
DJ Giddens
The board fumbled DJ Giddens all the way to pick No. 243, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick249
Rnd7
Woody Marks
Woody Marks at the 249th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick255
Rnd7
Corey Kiner
A running back of that caliber at pick 255 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick256
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
Taking Kyle Monangai in Round 7, Pick 40 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
