Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB

FutureB+
The Cowboys cashed the board's mistake on Strong: B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Ian Strong, the No. 77 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 3, Pick 33. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Minkah Fitzpatrick leading the way.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
They paid sticker price for Anthony Hill Jr. in slot 39, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick40
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They paid up for Sonny Styles at the 40th pick when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Michael Taaffe. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick79
Rnd3
Antonio Williams
Value with a capital V on Antonio Williams in Round 3, Pick 15, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick93
Rnd3
Austin Siereveld
Austin Siereveld in No. 93 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick97
Rnd3
Ian Strong
Circle this one: Ian Strong at pick No. 97 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick116
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Monroe Freeling. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick152
Rnd5
Iapani Laloulu
Iapani Laloulu in the 152nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick177
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun in pick No. 177 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick185
Rnd6
Carson Beck
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Carson Beck at slot 185. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick217
Rnd7
Quinten Joyner
They took Quinten Joyner at par in No. 217, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick231
Rnd7
Jordan Castell
Jordan Castell at the 231st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
