Mullings should have been long gone. The Seahawks pounced, and earned a A-. The board owed the Seahawks one, and it paid up: Kalel Mullings, the No. 48 name on the board, sitting there at the 164th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
If Howard pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Adding Josh Oliver by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In pick 30 they get a problem off the edge, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
They jumped the gun on Tyler Booker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87
Rnd3
Malachi Moore
Somehow Malachi Moore was still sitting there in No. 87, and they pounced on premier safety value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick97
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
You do not let a linebacker like Smael Mondon Jr. reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick110
Rnd4
Tyler Warren
Taking Tyler Warren in the 110th pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick123
Rnd4
Alfred Collins
Steal is underselling it; Alfred Collins at slot 123 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick136
Rnd4
Bryce Foster
This one needs a full-page explanation: Bryce Foster in Round 4, Pick 35, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jack Bech
Jack Bech in the 138th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick146
Rnd5
Deontae Lawson
A linebacker of that caliber at the 146th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick164
Rnd5
Kalel Mullings
They barely believed it either: Kalel Mullings still on the board at No. 164. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick173
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
They reached a country mile for Davison Igbinosun at Round 5, Pick 35, and the board is aghast. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick187
Rnd6
Will Howard
Will Howard in pick No. 187 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick205
Rnd6
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at the 205th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick210
Rnd6
Parker Brailsford
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Parker Brailsford in slot 210, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick216
Rnd7
Jihaad Campbell
The board fumbled Jihaad Campbell all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick236
Rnd7
Gunnar Helm
Circle this one: Gunnar Helm at pick 236 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick242
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at the 242nd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
