The steal of the weekend belongs to the Seahawks and Howard: B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Will Howard got past him. The Seahawks do not have to explain a thing at slot 137. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They will need Buchanan to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In slot 30 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick50
Rnd2
Landon Jackson
A clean, defensible pick in pick 50 with a little surplus value in Landon Jackson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They paid up for Donovan Jackson at Round 2, Pick 20 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick56
Rnd2
Darien Porter
A real head-scratcher, Darien Porter in the 56th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick92
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
They went early on Jared Wilson in No. 92, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick137
Rnd4
Will Howard
Steal is underselling it; Will Howard at the Round 4 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick158
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A swing that ignored the value entirely, JJ Pegues well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick172
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 172nd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick175
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
They took Ajani Cornelius at par in the 175th pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
A wild overpay on Teddye Buchanan in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
A big swing on Jackson Hawes at pick 234, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
