The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Jeffrey Bassa, the No. 123 name on the board, sitting there at No. 235 like a gift left on the doorstep. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

The Williams reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
