Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bears kept it disciplined and banked a B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Bears spent pick No. 164 on Patrick Payton, a name the board had a full 43 spots lower.
On value alone, Wheatley makes the weekend a net positive. It is not that Wheatley is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Caleb Banks
In slot 25 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick57
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
They let Dillon Thieneman come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 25. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick89
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Zakee Wheatley in the Round 3 slot leaves interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots for later.
Pick129
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller at pick No. 129 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick164
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
They talked themselves into Patrick Payton at the 164th pick, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick239
Rnd7
PJ Williams
A straight-up fair deal on PJ Williams at pick 239, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick241
Rnd7
Tony Grimes
They took Tony Grimes at par in No. 241, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
