Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB- TradesA+ FutureA-
Grand theft in No. 209: the Bears steal Fitzgerald and grade out a B+.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 111 name on the board, stolen at No. 209.

The cost of the Majors reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Tyler Booker
In the 27th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him.
Pick39 Rnd2 Tre Harris
Tre Harris is a better player than pick No. 39 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick41 Rnd2 Grey Zabel
Grey Zabel at pick 41 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick44 Rnd2 Jake Majors
They reached a country mile for Jake Majors at slot 44, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Pick72 Rnd3 Kaleb Johnson
The board fumbled Kaleb Johnson all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick80 Rnd3 Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. at the 80th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick91 Rnd3 Gunnar Helm
You do not let a tight end like Gunnar Helm reach No. 91 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick97 Rnd3 Lathan Ransom
A reach for Lathan Ransom in Round 3, Pick 33; a little patience would have been rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick115 Rnd4 Cody Simon
Cody Simon in the 115th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick147 Rnd5 Oronde Gadsden II
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Oronde Gadsden II in slot 147. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick148 Rnd5 Hayden Conner
No edge and no loss on Hayden Conner in pick No. 148; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick159 Rnd5 CJ West
They talked themselves into CJ West at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick170 Rnd5 Devin Neal
Circle this one: Devin Neal at Round 5, Pick 33 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick193 Rnd6 Connor Colby
Somehow Connor Colby was still sitting there in No. 193, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick209 Rnd6 Ryan Fitzgerald
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Ryan Fitzgerald in the 209th pick, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick233 Rnd7 DJ Giddens
Steal is underselling it; DJ Giddens at pick 233 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick240 Rnd7 Clay Webb
They barely believed it either: Clay Webb still on the board at pick 240. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick243 Rnd7 Brant Kuithe
Brant Kuithe in the 243rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
