Draft Grade — Dolphins

FutureB-
The Dolphins drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: D-. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Dolphins spent Round 5, Pick 38 on Trey Zuhn III, a name most had 50 spots down the list.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
Spending an early pick on safety with running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The Allen steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 10th pick they get an enforcer at safety at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick19
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Carnell Tate
Taking Carnell Tate in the 40th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick59
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
They did well to land Elijah Sarratt in No. 59, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick63
Rnd2
Nyck Harbor
Fair-plus on Nyck Harbor, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick71
Rnd3
CJ Allen
The board fumbled CJ Allen all the way to pick No. 71, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick77
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
They bypassed pressing needs at running back to take Michael Taaffe, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick81
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
They took Eli Stowers at par in pick 81, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick93
Rnd3
Austin Siereveld
Austin Siereveld at Round 3, Pick 29 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick98
Rnd3
Akheem Mesidor
They left a pile of value on the table to take Akheem Mesidor this early at the 98th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick104
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A straight-up fair deal on D'Angelo Ponds at the 104th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick131
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
A quiet steal in pick No. 131: Bryce Lance for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick137
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
Nice patience on Michael Trigg, who had no business lasting to No. 137. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
They reached a country mile for Jacob Rodriguez at slot 138, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick145
Rnd5
Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard slid further than he should have, and pick 145 is lovely value for the safety. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick150
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gracen Halton well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick178
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trey Zuhn III. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick243
Rnd7
Diego Pavia
They paid sticker price for Diego Pavia in the 243rd overall pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick253
Rnd7
Haynes King
A wild overpay on Haynes King in Round 7, Pick 39, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick254
Rnd7
Luke Hasz
Luke Hasz at slot 254 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
