Draft Grade — Dolphins

FutureA+
Quarterback settled, Mendoza in the fold, and a D+ for the Dolphins. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Dolphins spent pick No. 144 on DJ Campbell, a name most had 32 spots down the list. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. With interior defensive lineman and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
The Reese pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In No. 8 they get a two-high chess piece at fair value.
Pick16
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Mansoor Delane
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Mansoor Delane at the 35th pick is the proof. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick39
Rnd2
Gennings Dunker
Nice patience on Gennings Dunker, who had no business lasting to the 39th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick59
Rnd2
Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese in Round 2, Pick 27 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick66
Rnd3
Nyck Harbor
Circle this one: Nyck Harbor at pick 66 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick74
Rnd3
Colton Hood
A want over a need in pick No. 74: Colton Hood adds a cornerback while interior defensive lineman and running back keeps waiting.
Pick75
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick89
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane at pick 89 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick90
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman and running back to take A.J. Haulcy, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick106
Rnd4
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers at the 106th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Pick128
Rnd4
Whit Weeks
Whit Weeks at No. 128 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick136
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman and running back still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 36 on Bray Hubbard, a safety they were not short of.
Pick144
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
Value said wait; DJ Campbell in the 144th overall pick says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick146
Rnd5
Boubacar Traore
They paid sticker price for Boubacar Traore in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick168
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jacob Rodriguez at pick 168. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick194
Rnd6
Lander Barton
They read the board right and Lander Barton was the payoff at pick No. 194. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
