The Bears answered their biggest question with McCarthy. Grade: B-. The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
If Watts pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 9th pick they get a passer to set the clock by, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick37
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at No. 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan at slot 72 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick81
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Johnny Wilson. The roster fit checks out.
Pick118
Rnd4
Tanor Bortolini
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tanor Bortolini this early at pick 118. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick122
Rnd4
Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick at the Round 4 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick134
Rnd4
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Nice patience on Tyrone Tracy Jr., who had no business lasting to pick No. 134. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick185
Rnd6
Eric Watts
Value said wait; Eric Watts in slot 185 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
