FutureA
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Patriots. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent No. 106 on Nick Nash, a name most had 147 spots down the list.
That Campbell pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In slot 12 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at Round 2, Pick 7 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick43
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
A big swing on Donovan Ezeiruaku at pick 43, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick70
Rnd3
Harold Fannin Jr.
The board fumbled Harold Fannin Jr. all the way to the 70th pick, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick79
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick80
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in the 80th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick106
Rnd4
Nick Nash
Value said wait; Nick Nash in slot 106 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick115
Rnd4
Maxwell Hairston
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Maxwell Hairston in Round 4, Pick 14. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick141
Rnd5
Nohl Williams
A wild overpay on Nohl Williams in the 141st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick221
Rnd7
Seth McLaughlin
They let Seth McLaughlin come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick223
Rnd7
Cam Skattebo
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 223 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick235
Rnd7
RJ Harvey
RJ Harvey at the 235th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
