Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Williams is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bears did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. If Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

With cornerback unsolved, spending premium capital on OLB-EDGE is the choice that costs them. The Paul pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In pick 1 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Pick9 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In No. 9 they get a true top target at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick74 Rnd3 Blake Corum
They paid a round early for Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 10, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick80 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in the 80th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick110 Rnd4 Leonard Taylor III
A slide stopped in the 110th overall pick, with Leonard Taylor III worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick111 Rnd4 Javon Solomon
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with cornerback open.
Pick116 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
A wild overpay on Theo Johnson in pick No. 116, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick123 Rnd4 James Williams
Fair-plus on James Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick142 Rnd5 AJ Barner
Value said wait; AJ Barner in No. 142 says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick143 Rnd5 Nelson Ceaser
Nelson Ceaser in the 143rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick199 Rnd6 Tahj Washington
A tidy little value on Tahj Washington in pick 199, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick252 Rnd7 Ethan Driskell
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ethan Driskell in slot 252. A need, and now a little less of one.
