FutureB-
A franchise passer in Williams headlines a D- weekend for the Bears. Somebody took the Bears to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
Everything downstream of Caleb Williams depends on Caleb Williams, and the building knows it. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. They are betting Robinson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
They banked enough surplus on Jackson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the 9th pick they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
No drama and no debate, Jackson Powers-Johnson went about where he belonged in pick No. 52. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Blake Corum
Fair-plus on Blake Corum, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick84
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman open.
Pick111
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
A conviction pick on Darius Robinson at No. 111 that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick120
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 20, with Khyree Jackson worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick121
Rnd4
Tyrice Knight
A clean, defensible pick in the 121st overall pick with a little surplus value in Tyrice Knight. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick123
Rnd4
Malik Washington
A tidy little value on Malik Washington in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick143
Rnd5
Theo Johnson
A reach on Theo Johnson in pick No. 143; the board had better options right there. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
