Draft Grade — Bears

FutureB-
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Bears took AJ Barner at the 143rd pick, roughly 60 spots before his name belonged. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Trotter Jr..
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the 9th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick52
Rnd2
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in Round 2, Pick 20 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. slipping to pick 75 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Pick84
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at slot 84 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick111
Rnd4
Jaden Hicks
Jaden Hicks at No. 111 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick120
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Robinson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick121
Rnd4
Daijun Edwards
They went early on Daijun Edwards in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick123
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
A real head-scratcher, Theo Johnson in the 123rd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick143
Rnd5
AJ Barner
AJ Barner at No. 143 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
