Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB
Williams is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D-.

The Bears lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Put together, it is a D-.

So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The Bears indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots stayed open. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

If Worthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. However the rest shakes out, Baker at that price is a win they earned.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In No. 1 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
Pick10 Rnd1 Jared Verse
Jared Verse in the 10th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick43 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at the 43rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick72 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
They paid sticker price for Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick75 Rnd3 Kamren Kinchens
A straight-up fair deal on Kamren Kinchens at slot 75, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick111 Rnd4 Javon Baker
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Javon Baker at Round 4, Pick 11. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick112 Rnd4 Maason Smith
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots sat open.
Pick123 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in pick 123 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick187 Rnd6 Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon in Round 6, Pick 12 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
