Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D
ValueB-

FutureB+
A passer of the future in Williams, and a D, for the Bears. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bears shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The Vidal steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They will need Smith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the 1st overall pick they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Pick10
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the 10th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A reach on Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 43; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick75
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in pick 75 leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick108
Rnd4
Jaden Hicks
No edge and no loss on Jaden Hicks in Round 4, Pick 8; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick123
Rnd4
DJ James
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing DJ James in the Round 4 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick143
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen in pick No. 143 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick253
Rnd7
Kimani Vidal
They will replay Kimani Vidal at No. 253 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
