FutureA+
The Bears worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-. The Bears torched the value chart for Tanor Bortolini, taking him 48 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The veteran additions, Bryan Bresee chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
In the end it comes back to Chop Robinson, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a bendy edge with upside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
Tyler Nubin at pick 39 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick41
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 41 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick47
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Nothing to complain about; Edgerrin Cooper went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick52
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
A clean, defensible pick in slot 52 with a little surplus value in T.J. Tampa. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick75
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in the 75th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick91
Rnd3
Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo in the 91st pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick109
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at slot 109 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick121
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
They went early on Ben Sinnott in Round 4, Pick 21, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick149
Rnd5
Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick in No. 149 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick167
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
A wild overpay on Drake Nugent in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at pick 169 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick174
Rnd5
Isaiah Williams
They paid a round early for Isaiah Williams in pick No. 174, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
