No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

Nobody else had Lander Barton anywhere near Round 4, Pick 31. The Patriots did, by 51 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

The Patriots indulged a want in Barton while a need in edge rusher, safety and other spots stayed open. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Hurst.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

In slot 31 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, and a steal at that. More want than need.

A surprising call. With edge rusher, safety and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 131 on Lander Barton, a linebacker they were not short of.

Ted Hurst in Round 5, Pick 31 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
