ahurley DRAFTING FOR THESteelers

Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB-
TradesC+
FutureB+
More right than wrong for the Steelers, and a B- to prove it. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Justin Rogers at Round 4, Pick 20, a reach of 41 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
That Hart pick is the receipt they will wave around later. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Frazier pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, running back and other spots.
They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
They took Tyler Guyton at par in No. 39, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick52
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, running back and other spots to take Zach Frazier, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick70
Rnd3
Javon Bullard
Good price on Javon Bullard in slot 70, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick105
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cedric Gray well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick107
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in pick 107 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick119
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
A reach for Jordan Travis in the 119th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick120
Rnd4
Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers at pick 120 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick158
Rnd5
Cam Hart
They will replay Cam Hart at the 158th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick198
Rnd6
David Ugwoegbu
David Ugwoegbu at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick241
Rnd7
McKade Mettauer
They reached a country mile for McKade Mettauer at slot 241, and the board is aghast. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
