The Lions checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

Nobody had Cooper Mays this high, and it is not close. The Lions reached 93 spots to get him at the 198th pick. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it. Getting West where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In the 28th pick they get a true top target. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick60 Rnd2 Donovan Ezeiruaku
Donovan Ezeiruaku at pick No. 60 is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick101 Rnd3 Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch in pick 101 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick133 Rnd4 Jackson Slater
They jumped the gun on Jackson Slater, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick198 Rnd6 Cooper Mays
A wild overpay on Cooper Mays in the 198th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick227 Rnd7 CJ West
They let CJ West come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 9. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick230 Rnd7 Barryn Sorrell
Barryn Sorrell at No. 230 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick246 Rnd7 Nohl Williams
Nohl Williams at the 246th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
