Draft Grade — Falcons
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesC
FutureB+
The Falcons answered their biggest question with McCarthy. Grade: B. The search is over. The Falcons handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The Hadden steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Falcons indulged a want in Smith while a need in running back, tight end and other spots stayed open.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. They will need McCarthy to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 27th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
They did well to land Troy Franklin in the 35th pick, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Roman Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Roman Wilson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick48
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
Kris Jenkins in pick No. 48 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick74
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at No. 74 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick79
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
They took Michael Hall Jr. at par in Round 3, Pick 15, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick108
Rnd4
Maason Smith
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at running back, tight end and other spots sat open.
Pick142
Rnd5
Jamari Thrash
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jamari Thrash at pick 142. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick186
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
They liked Joe Milton III enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 186. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick196
Rnd6
Kamal Hadden
Steal is underselling it; Kamal Hadden at the 196th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
