Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueC NeedB TradesC FutureB-
The jury is out on the 49ers. For now, C+.

The war room fell hard for Barryn Sorrell, and it showed at No. 189: 126 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.

That Williams pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.

A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

So much rides on Josh Conerly Jr. that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Josh Conerly Jr.
In pick No. 20 they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick44 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in the 44th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston at No. 75 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jared Wilson well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick99 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Andrew Mukuba at the 99th overall pick is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick112 Rnd4 Antwaun Powell-Ryland
They reached into another round for Antwaun Powell-Ryland, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick121 Rnd4 Savion Williams
They barely believed it either: Savion Williams still on the board at pick No. 121. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138 Rnd4 Ty Robinson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ty Robinson this early at slot 138. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick139 Rnd4 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick148 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 148 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick189 Rnd6 Barryn Sorrell
They talked themselves into Barryn Sorrell at No. 189, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick210 Rnd6 Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson in the 210th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick221 Rnd7 Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith at the 221st pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick228 Rnd7 Marcus Yarns
A conviction pick on Marcus Yarns at Round 7, Pick 10 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick232 Rnd7 Eric Gregory
Eric Gregory at pick No. 232 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick255 Rnd7 Jay Toia
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jay Toia in No. 255, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
