FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D-. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jay Toia at the Round 7 slot is 104 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Getting Tuten where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the 17th overall pick they get an anchor for the defensive front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Landon Jackson
Landon Jackson slipping to No. 43 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick56
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
The board had cheaper options than Maxwell Hairston at pick No. 56, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick75
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick 75 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick99
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Nice patience on Ozzy Trapilo, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 35. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick104
Rnd4
Jaylin Noel
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jaylin Noel at the 104th pick is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick112
Rnd4
Billy Bowman Jr.
No drama and no debate, Billy Bowman Jr. went about where he belonged in slot 112. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick131
Rnd4
Tyler Shough
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Shough at pick 131, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Jonah Monheim
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jonah Monheim well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Somehow Anthony Belton was still sitting there in pick No. 138, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick139
Rnd4
JJ Pegues
Value said wait; JJ Pegues in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick148
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They reached a country mile for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at Round 5, Pick 9, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick175
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ajani Cornelius at the 175th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick189
Rnd6
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in the 189th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick221
Rnd7
Barryn Sorrell
They left a pile of value on the table to take Barryn Sorrell this early at pick 221. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick228
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
They paid a round early for Marcus Yarns in No. 228, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jahvaree Ritzie
Jahvaree Ritzie at the 232nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jay Toia
Jay Toia at Round 7, Pick 37 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
