Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesF FutureB+
The phones sank the Bears this weekend: D-.

The Bears spent real capital to be 99 picks early on Marvin Jones Jr., and the board is going to hold them to it. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback and wide receiver open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Lew at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Dillon Thieneman
In slot 25 they get a rangy last line of defense at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick60 Rnd2 Jacob Rodriguez
They let Jacob Rodriguez come to them and pounced at the 60th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick63 Rnd2 Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. at pick No. 63 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick89 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
A curious use of Round 3, Pick 25. Quarterback and wide receiver needed the pick; a safety in Michael Taaffe did not.
Pick104 Rnd4 Connor Lew
Connor Lew in pick 104 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis in No. 106 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick129 Rnd4 Jalen Farmer
Jalen Farmer at slot 129 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick141 Rnd5 DeMonte Capehart
A reasonable price with a little left over, DeMonte Capehart in the 141st pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick143 Rnd5 Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts in the 143rd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick167 Rnd5 Aamil Wagner
The board had cheaper options than Aamil Wagner at pick No. 167, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick183 Rnd6 Bryce Boettcher
Fair-plus on Bryce Boettcher, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick217 Rnd7 VJ Payne
A quiet steal in No. 217: VJ Payne for less than the market said. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick239 Rnd7 Marvin Jones Jr.
Marvin Jones Jr. in Round 7, Pick 23 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick241 Rnd7 Dominic Zvada
They talked themselves into Dominic Zvada at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick243 Rnd7 Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster in the 243rd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
