rickydico DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Grand theft in the Round 5 slot: the Patriots steal Phillips and grade out a B-. You could see the war room lean forward. Jordan Phillips at pick No. 144 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Thomas pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In No. 4 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
A reach for Azareye'h Thomas in pick 38; a little patience would have been rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick69
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
By-the-book stuff, Elic Ayomanor at pick No. 69 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick77
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo at the 77th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick106
Rnd4
Billy Bowman Jr.
No edge and no loss on Billy Bowman Jr. in slot 106; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jordan Phillips
Somehow Jordan Phillips was still sitting there in the 144th overall pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick171
Rnd5
Elijah Roberts
The board had cheaper options than Elijah Roberts at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick220
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards is a better player than Round 7, Pick 4 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They paid a round early for Jamon Dumas-Johnson in pick No. 238, more than the board wanted. It adds depth where they could use a little.
