The Steelers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. The Steelers bet big and early on Malachi Lawrence, 30 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
However the rest shakes out, Allar at that price is a win they earned. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In the 30th overall pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value.
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren slid further than he should have, and slot 53 is lovely value for the safety. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
No edge and no loss on Domonique Orange in Round 3, Pick 12; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick85
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at No. 85 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jalon Kilgore
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jalon Kilgore. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99
Rnd3
Keylan Rutledge
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Keylan Rutledge well ahead of where he belonged. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick108
Rnd4
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence at the 108th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick121
Rnd4
Eric Rivers
A reach for Eric Rivers in the 121st overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick130
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
The board had cheaper options than Davison Igbinosun at pick No. 130, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
Pick135
Rnd4
Ted Hurst
They paid up for Ted Hurst at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
Pick159
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar in slot 159 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
