Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesA- FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Bears: B.

Somehow the biggest item on the list survived the weekend. The Bears never addressed edge rusher, and it is the kind of gap that lingers. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

The Hartman reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That Perry pick is the receipt they will wave around later. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.

Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In the 1st pick they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick9 Rnd1 Jer'Zhan Newton
Jer'Zhan Newton at the Round 1 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick80 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. at pick 80 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick110 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at slot 110 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick122 Rnd4 Kris Abrams-Draine
They paid sticker price for Kris Abrams-Draine in the 122nd overall pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick146 Rnd5 Theo Johnson
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Theo Johnson. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick194 Rnd6 Rasheen Ali
They took Rasheen Ali at par in No. 194, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick196 Rnd6 Sam Hartman
They paid a round early for Sam Hartman in Round 6, Pick 21, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick238 Rnd7 Matthew Jones
A straight-up fair deal on Matthew Jones at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick254 Rnd7 Mark Perry
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Mark Perry at the 254th overall pick is the proof. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
