Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Chiefs turned the phones into found money: B.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chiefs took Luke McCaffrey a full 39 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. However the rest shakes out, Pritchett at that price is a win they earned.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick40 Rnd2 Kris Jenkins
Kris Jenkins in No. 40 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick63 Rnd2 Javon Bullard
No drama and no debate, Javon Bullard went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 31. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick90 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in the Round 3 slot leaves interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick95 Rnd3 Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving at pick No. 95 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick102 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at slot 102 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick131 Rnd4 Javon Foster
A reasonable price with a little left over, Javon Foster in pick 131. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick141 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at pick 141, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick161 Rnd5 Nehemiah Pritchett
Nehemiah Pritchett in the 161st pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick175 Rnd5 Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the 175th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick177 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in Round 6, Pick 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jaden Crumedy
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaden Crumedy. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick223 Rnd7 Nathaniel Watson
A reach on Nathaniel Watson in slot 223; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick252 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
The board had cheaper options than Tanner McLachlan at No. 252, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick253 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
A quiet steal in the Round 7 slot: Joshua Cephus for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
