Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
B+
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB
The Chiefs fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Chiefs were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
Barrett has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Getting Restrepo where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The veteran additions, Andy Dalton chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders in Round 2, Pick 1 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Circle this one: Brenden Rice at pick No. 100 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell at the 128th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick161
Rnd5
Michael Barrett
They left a pile of value on the table to take Michael Barrett this early at pick 161. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171
Rnd5
Justin Eboigbe
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Justin Eboigbe. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick181
Rnd6
Aki Ogunbiyi
Aki Ogunbiyi at the 181st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick206
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Thomas at slot 206 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick208
Rnd6
Jalen Berger
They read the board right and Jalen Berger was the payoff at the Round 6 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick223
Rnd7
Cody Schrader
A reach on Cody Schrader in pick No. 223; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick242
Rnd7
Xavier Restrepo
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Restrepo at slot 242 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick249
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
They let Eric Gentry come to them and pounced at the 249th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick251
Rnd7
Willie Roberts
No edge and no loss on Willie Roberts in pick 251; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
