Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB+
The Chiefs fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+. The rest of the league had time to spare on Jordan Jefferson; the Chiefs did not wait, grabbing him 37 spots ahead at slot 140.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick36
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Brian Thomas Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick66
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
They took Mekhi Wingo at par in the 66th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Mike Sainristil at Round 3, Pick 31. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick130
Rnd4
Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker at the 130th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick140
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
Value said wait; Jordan Jefferson in No. 140 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick161
Rnd5
Rasheen Ali
Rasheen Ali at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick171
Rnd5
Christian Jones
A big swing on Christian Jones at the 171st overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylan Ford. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick177
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Nice patience on Zion Tupuola-Fetui, who had no business lasting to pick No. 177. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick206
Rnd6
Isaiah Williams
A tidy bit of business in Round 6, Pick 31, where Isaiah Williams graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick213
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
A clean, defensible pick in slot 213 with a little surplus value in Jase McClellan. The roster fit checks out.
Pick227
Rnd7
Isaiah Neyor
A quiet steal in pick 227: Isaiah Neyor for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick249
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
A reach for Tanner McLachlan in the 249th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
