Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
Williams is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a D-. There is reaching, and then there is AJ Barner at the 110th overall pick. The Bears jumped the board by 74 and dared it to prove them wrong. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Landing Muhammad III that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In pick No. 1 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the 9th pick they get a go-to option on the outside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chop Robinson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick75
Rnd3
Zach Frazier
They paid sticker price for Zach Frazier in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick106
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mohamed Kamara well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick110
Rnd4
AJ Barner
AJ Barner at the 110th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick127
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
A big swing on Malik Mustapha at pick No. 127, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick146
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Frank Gore Jr. in slot 146 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186
Rnd6
Moose Muhammad III
Moose Muhammad III in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick232
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
Steal is underselling it; Zakhari Franklin at the 232nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
