Draft Grade — Bears
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Bears bet the future on McCarthy. The board says A-.

The Bears spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That Jackson pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

It is not that Arnold is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, J.J. McCarthy and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 Jer'Zhan Newton
In pick 16 they get an anchor for the defensive front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick29 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In the 29th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Nate Wiggins
Nothing to complain about; Nate Wiggins went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick69 Rnd3 Antwane Wells Jr.
No drama and no debate, Antwane Wells Jr. went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 5. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick80 Rnd3 Terrion Arnold
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Terrion Arnold adds a defensive back while running back and linebacker keeps waiting.
Pick105 Rnd4 Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge in slot 105 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick132 Rnd4 Cade Stover
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in the 132nd pick leaves running back and linebacker for later.
Pick142 Rnd5 Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson at pick No. 142 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick183 Rnd6 Isaiah Adams
Isaiah Adams in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick226 Rnd7 Landon Jackson
Landon Jackson in the 226th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
