The Steelers cashed the board's mistake on Williams: B-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. James Williams, the No. 124 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 178. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is not that Van Pran is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first.
Reaching for Van Pran left real value on the table behind him.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
JC Latham
JC Latham in the Round 1 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick58
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Sedrick Van Pran, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick84
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker slipping to pick 84 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick91
Rnd3
Renardo Green
They let Renardo Green come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 28. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick98
Rnd3
Javon Baker
A tidy little value on Javon Baker in the 98th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Pick119
Rnd4
Caelen Carson
Caelen Carson at the 119th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick178
Rnd6
James Williams
They robbed the room for James Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick195
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
They will replay Xavier Thomas at slot 195 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
